What can happen after butt implants surgery?

When undergoing plastic surgery, it is important for the patients to understand and accept the idea that each procedure is associated with certain risks and complications that could occur during the surgery or post-operatively. Some procedures can be more complex than others and the risks can be different, depending on the health condition of the patient, the level of post-operative care, and so on. For patients considering butt implant surgery, it is important to know what can happen after the procedure.

Before anything else, you should understand that when this procedure is performed, gluteal implants of a certain volume are inserted into pockets created inside or under the gluteal muscles of the butt. This means that the tissues of the buttocks will be stretched and will take some time to accommodate the implants. This translates into a certain level of pain, discomfort, and tension in the buttocks that can be experienced for the first few days or week after the procedure. The level of pain is not intense and should be easily alleviated with simple analgesic medication. However, if you know you have a low tolerance for pain, the recommendation is to discuss this with the plastic surgeon for stronger pills to be prescribed.

The tension felt on the buttocks is normal after butt implant surgery. This sensation can last a while, even up to two weeks or more, depending on the size of the implants and the initial condition of the buttock tissue. Generally speaking, the larger the implants used, the longer it might take the body to adjust to them.

Aside from the pain and discomfort for the first few days post-op, the patient might also experience the discomfort of having to sleep exclusively on the tummy and not being allowed to sit on the buttocks. When sitting down, the recommendation is to use a pillow and position it under the hamstrings, so the buttocks don’t actually touch the chair or the couch. Putting pressure on the buttocks after butt implant surgery can result in implant shifting or wounds opening.

Unfortunately, infections can also happen after this procedure. It could be a deep tissue infection if the implants were not properly cleaned during surgery that would require the removal of the implants and cleaning the pocket or infection on the incisions. Antibiotics treatment is the first line of defense when it comes to infections, but it is important for the patient to seek professional help as soon as she notices the first signs of infection. This means you should contact the plastic surgeon or the doctor if you are experiencing high fever, intense pain, and pus coming from the surgical incisions.

Delayed wound healing or incision opening can occur in the case of patients who smoke after the procedure or patients who don’t follow the post-operative protocol.
