There are many different types of plastic surgery available today. Each of these can help people to improve the way they look. No matter what kind of plastic surgery you go through, there are guidelines on what to do in order to help make sure the surgery is a successful with favorable results.

During the consultation with the surgeon, the patients are assessed to determine whether the surgery is right for them and if their body can handle the procedure. A medical history of the patient is also required to check whether they are taking medications that may interfere with the surgery. Certain medications are contraindicated before the surgery because they can cause fatal complications such as excessive bleeding. This is the reason why patients should be careful about what they take in before the surgery.

Medications are to be avoided not only before but also after the surgery. There are prescribed medications as well as over-the-counter medications that should be avoided in order to prevent excessive bleeding during or after the surgery. These medications have an effect on the ability of the blood to clot.

Any kind of aspirin should be stopped a week before the surgery. If the aspirin is really needed by the patient, a low dose may be prescribed depending on the condition of the patient. The surgeon will discuss necessary measures that the patient can do to make sure that stopping or lowering the dose won’t endanger the patient.

Aside from aspirin, there are also blood thinners that are used by some patients. Medications like coumadin and warfarin are not to be used before and after the surgery because it prevents the formation of blood clot. When blood clots cannot be easily formed, there is a great risk that patients will excessively bleed. Although the bleeding is not readily seen, it could occur inside the body which is still very dangerous and can even be fatal.

Medications that are not necessarily used to stop the blood from clotting but are for other purposes may still have an effect. Pain medications such as celecoxib, mefenamic acid, ibuprofen, and many others are also to be avoided. Even if such medications are available over the counter or without prescription, they can still be dangerous when patients use them before surgery.

It is best for patients to report all the medications that they currently take so that the surgeons can find a way around it. They can either order them to stop with the medication, substitute it for another, or not let the patients go through the procedure. The risk of excessively bleeding due to the medications is high, and surgeons don’t want to risk their patients’ lives. Patients should also make sure not to take any medication before the surgery if the surgeons don’t know about it. Over the counter pain relievers may seem harmless, but they can also cause complications during and after the surgery.
